Chicken Stories
We are four months in at the farm and the story so far is that we are glad in our decision. The old farmhouse is cozy. The landscape and gardens change by the hour. The glass house patiently awaits its appointment at the beauty parlor next summer.
And the chickens? We love the chickens best.
We inherited them with the farm. And to go from never owning a chicken to looking after nearly forty of them is a big change. But they are getting to know us and we them. I think it’s safe to say that all parties are pleased. It’s like an arranged marriage where the couple actually falls in love.
We’ve compiled a bit of footage so you can fall in love as well. Watch for Henrietta, a Silver Laced Polish whose bouffant hairstyle sometimes impedes her vision but not enough to stop her from ruling the roost. Ragnarok, or Raggy for short, has hilarious feathered feet and glossy tail feathers. Lisa and the Golden Girls are Buff Orpingtons. They’re serene, wise, and less bickersome. While the other hens can get panicky at the slightest thing, the Golden Girls don’t let their feathers get ruffled. They keep calm and carry on.
A warning: In the video, I coo at the chickens a fair amount. Couldn’t be helped. They made me do it.
