A Parisian Cowgirl's Dream Kitchen

This is Jane Moore's kitchen, photographed by Peter Vitale for Veranda Magazine. I have been smitten with this kitchen for the past couple of years -- the raw wood, the industrial stools, the European artifacts. In fact, I buy things for Finder Not Keeper that I think will look good in this kitchen or a kitchen like it. Click here if you are interested in the collection below.

Jane Moore is a designer who lives in Houston, Texas. Veranda Magazine featured her work in several issues. Also, she is the mother of Shannon Newsom, who is married to Andrew Newsom. Together, Shannon and Andrew started a catalog called Wisteria. Guess who helps them with designing and sourcing all of the interesting reproductions they sell? Jane Moore.

Kitchen of Donna Temple Brown. Love those iron spice racks! Photo via here.

This unfitted kitchen was designed by Donna Temple Brown, also a Houston-based decorator. It is rough yet elegant, unfinished yet polished. Note the brick pavers as countertop and the casually leaning gilt-framed oil painting. I think it is interesting that this trend found such an audience in Texas. Like Tim McGraw and Carla Bruni had a love child. In other words, it's Parisian cowgirl chic!

Joni Webb, whose blog Cote de Texas is riveting reading on the subject of Southern style, talks about the oil money that funded these kitchens. Perhaps this style is a way to disguise wealth, or to age it. I also see a parallel between today's hyper-competitive cooking shows and this very masculine kitchen that looks like it could be moved when the cattle herd heads north.

Either way, the trend is solidly here. This kitchen belongs to Keith Johnson and Glen Senk. Johnson is the antiques buyer for Anthropologie and the host of the show Man Shops Globe. Senk is the former CEO of Urban Outfitters. Two more influencers who tell us that aged wood, white walls, and a few old world treasures make a kitchen beautiful. I agree!

Meat grinders to chop herbs? Might be worth a try!

Breadboards with their cuts and scrapes exposed add authenticity to a kitchen and give it a sense of history, an instant backstory that hints at all the delicious things previously cooked. Interior Design by Annelle Primos. Photo by Chipper Hatter via here.

Do you have a little of that Buckaroo Babette in you? Le cowboy chic, c'est moi!
